Rosa, a viscount's daughter, is ordered by her father to marry Eidrian, the Earl of Barklea, despite knowing that he already has someone he loves. On their wedding night, he cruelly rejects her and tells her that he finds her ugly. But Rosa has no romantic feelings for him either. Her only goal is to escape her father's control and obtain her freedom. She decides to rebuild her husband's financially ruined household, save money, and eventually divorce him. As Rosa proves herself capable at everything from cooking and farming to childcare and swordsmanship, Eidrian gradually begins to fall for the wife he once treated coldly.
