I'm betting the prince isn't actually a bastard, and he's the king's nephew or something else that the king feels he has to lie to protect him...but still sucks for not trusting his wife with the truth. Mostly just because I've seen that plot line plenty of times before, and it explains why the king's behavior just doesn't feel like it adds ups.
