They left a 7 year old girl in the mountains to die, and they think she's still alive because...all of the children of the household falling bedridden (likely meaning the end of their bloodline) wouldn't be enough consequence if she actually died? First of all, based on what? It doesn't sound like they knew there would be any consequences, so why start acting like you know exactly the sort of consequences for specific actions? Secondly, the family bloodline being doomed seems like a pretty big consequence.
