As soon as she realized the situation was threatening, she should have simply "agreed". He's obviously not reliable, but he's at least claiming that he wouldn't have hurt the other two candidates if they agreed to break the engagement. She can always tell ML she was threatened later.
But also, any halfway decent investigation would place him as the culprit to her disappearance. They were in public together, in uniform, before this.
