I'm just not clear on what blame they'd place at the royal family that tried to hand out medicine but were refused by the people railing against it. Even IRL, anti-vaxxers don't blame the government when their loved ones die from preventable diseases (at least not on a large scale).
You've got my attention. Fear can keep a person alive or take away their life. Author really took a step closer than others with this idea. It's good to see in a story.
