Both protagonists are victims here imo. He, as a young man to 'cure' a noble woman's boredom and being groomed as a perfect lover, and she a classical victim of her looks and patriarchal society. The difference is whereas Robert, the ML uses his knowledge to get back at noble society and get them to spend their money, having a very cynical view on life and people, Deandra the FL keeps her morals strong and steadfast. At least Robert is still 'pure' enough to recognize Deandra's true nature. And you can see that his true nature is good as well. She brings the best our of him. Now let's see what meanders and hurdles they have to go through before they can be together.

I love the FL and seeing her very realistic struggles with a misogynistic society. I can't say "guy who thinks 'no' means 'try again later', is a merchant with the skills of a used car salesman, and sleeps around with married women" is my favorite ML, even if he's 'kind'. He just feels like the kind of guy that would be a "good and loving husband" while having endless affairs, even though I'm sure the story will tell us that he falls in love with FL and changes.

Such an interesting twist done well. Especially on the part of the male lead character. It’s one thing to have a character written as “scum but gets away with it because this is romance”. But the circumstances and the kind of people our female lead and the male lead are at their core actually spur the male lead himself to see things differently—including himself—and start to change. I’m glad to read a story like this if it addresses the issues in the male leads character and genuinely spurs change in him.

He still has the mindset of his pride in being a ladykiller as he pursues his perhaps first genuine attraction to a lady. But one can tell he’s doing what he can with what he knows in the moment. This makes me anticipate how the story will go, thanks to who our female lead is.

Setting up her first friend to actually be cheated on (because that fiance absolutely will at the first opportunity) isn't exactly doing her a kindness.
