So the plan for keeping her safe was to engage her to a burgeoning psychopath? I know it worked out in the end, but that had way too much chance of going horrificly wrong.


Also there was literally no reason given for them keeping the engagement secret. Publicizing it would have been more protection than not, and wouldn't have given anything away about her magic.
