Carliana is a female count who gains an unexpected freedom when her engagement is broken. Rather than being devastated, she uses the opportunity to pursue what she actually wants: becoming a librarian at the Royal Library. There she meets Ditosius, a handsome and seemingly flirtatious member of the royal family. Ditosius quickly becomes fascinated by Carliana's intelligence and enormous thirst for knowledge.
