The "age gap" is 6 years. That's too big in the opening scene, when he saves her from humiliation. But, while she falls for him there, they're not romantically set up -- just an age-appropriate swoon for a gentleman stepping up for her. The action takes place when they are 22 and 28, when 6 years is much more reasonable (especially in the historical setting). I'm not saying this just because my parents were 22 and 28 when they got married!
