Good but.... Not to spoil anything but there's another less attractive guy who seems to love the FL and given what happens in the latest chapter, she'll probably go back to him. He had feelings for her for around a year even though she was assumedly a commoner, helped her, gave her a home, made his affection clear but didn't twist her arm to marry him, and he just seems like a nice guy who really likes her.

My problem is I think I know what'll happen next. We're at a point where the main male lead messed up royally, and in any other story we'd probably start looking for a new lead to replace him, or for the male lead to change and develop. I think this story will do what I hate the most and turn the second male lead into a bad guy for no reason just to make the male lead look better. Like, at this point the author hasn't done anything to imply that the less attractive noble is bad or he's done anything nefarious. But I'm sure we'll get some evil speech from him where suddenly his character does a 180 and he's a manipulative monster, and then the male lead rescues her and we're supposed to root for the male lead. And I hate this because typically when this happens the male lead doesn't really change or do anything to look better to the reader, we're just supposed to root for them because the second male lead was made to look worse to prop up the male lead who hasn't changed.

I don't think the less attractive noble has a second male lead status but I think he'll serve the same purpose. We're six chapters in with no villain and I wouldn't be surprised if this was the route they went with.

I can’t wholeheartedly agree with your assessment because dude was showing signs of Nice Guy Syndrome. He’s all like “Shouldn’t we think of getting married?” When they’re not even involved in that way. I don’t think he’ll become a major villain, though, even if he makes a comeback. Maybe an unintentional problem? The romantic equivalent somewhere between a speed bump and a fender-bender?

Of course the story’s 16 chapters deep now and we haven’t seen him again. You may have also changed your assessment of the ML.

Assessment remains the same of ML. Yeah, I was working off of a half remembered vague memory of the earlier chapter when I commented. Re-reading he definitely has some signs of "Nice Guy Syndrome," but I do think he'll play a part later on. Probably related to her missing her ring.

I do also think that they'll use him or someone else to "redeem" the ML. She clearly told him she doesn't want the ML and he decided, "Well if you're gonna do what you want to, then I'll do what I want to. And I want to pursue you despite your grievances," and I still doubt a proper apology or any genuine character growth is coming. He'll pretty much remain the same and they'll bring in another character for him to defeat and we'll all say, "Well ML was wrong, but he's not evil like this guy. So I guess he's the one meant for her."

I've seen it play out in a number of stories. Most recently, a story on this website that's escaping my memory, but a prince annuls engagement with FML, FML is actually the saint, he wants to be engaged to her again, she says no, and he still refuses to elaborate or even properly apologize for what happened. Then we see a nice knight who's actually very caring, but uh-oh, he can't be the ML because he's actually a TWIST BAD GUY. But then it gets weird because he's working for another twist bad guy who's... Not bad? It's weird, 99% of it could be fixed with a conversation, but my point still stands. Prince in this instance made no character development, hasn't really cared about the FML's opinion, still pesters her. But HEY! At least he's not a literal kidnapper who wants to take her for her power. He's just a prince who needs to marry her... for her power.... YAY!

That being said, I'm not gonna stop reading. I could write a whole essay on this terrible trope, but I also know Oreos aren't good for me and I'm still eating them once or twice a week. Overall I like the story, just dislike this trope a lot.

Chapter 03

Trash!

He misunderstood the whole thing on his own and said such hurtful things the day after getting married and sharing the first night!

.

Everything could have been solved if he had just told her from the start that Alec was married so, don not be close to him.

.

Instead he just had to say that after proposing to her and promising to love her and make her happy for the rest of their lives. 😡😡

Chapter 04

I would never forgive him if I were in FL's place.

Lucky for him, he got a chance because she lost her memories.

BUT hope FL hates him after regaining her memories!!!

oddly enough this reminds me of a novel i read called 'The Darkest Hour', by Maya Banks. in it, our male lead is a broken man barely living because he thinks his wife is dead when her plane went down during some sort of missionary trip ( i think, it's been so long since i read it i forgot the finer points) to south america. she's been 'dead' for over a year, and he's drowning in guilt and regret for his actions that led her to choose to take that trip in the first place. and then suddenly out of nowhere he gets a letter with all sorts of info showing that she's actually alive. He and his family go down and rescue her (They're private military operators of course) and she has no memory and trauma, etc. Slowly over time her memories come back, all the while our ML is trying to hide all the stressful events of the past, (their marriage was becoming strained, entirely his fault for feelings of inadequacy that he ended up taking out on her, but never abusive. Just misunderstandings and his own problems) but he had actually asked for divorce, even had the papers, and her remembering those papers and where they had been stashed were the last key to her memory returning. and then there's a whole bunch of other stuff happens but it's a happy ending in the end. It's an emotional rollercoaster, but it was a good novel.

so yeah, this manga story reminds me of it too.

I prefer if she'd just divorce him, but we all know they'd eventually be together again. I mean, I see this troupes especially irl, and that's frustrating for me since I don't understand why some wives would forgive their husbands or vice versa. They speak of the reason is love and that's why it confuses me. Like in the ML's case, there are many ways he could check why Alec is always near the FL. There's a good one: confrontation. But I guess it's easier to let a girl fall for you than asking your friend for the truth and this infuriates me.

Since reading this is a bit triggering for me, I'll be dropping the manga, but I do hope other readers appreciate reading this. It brings out unpleasant memories for me.

Chapter 05

I hate seeing him jealous like that, especially when FL lost her memories and doesn't remember anything.

For now he does not deserve to be jealous!

This guy's a scumbag but he's the ML so it's fine. /sarcasm

What a bizarre and convoluted start. The ML makes all sorts of mistakes, betrays the FML, takes advantage of her, and he's not raked over coals because of it? This is the kind story where the guy needs to face repercussions ASAP because otherwise it's hard to care about him or want him to get with the FML. I'm fine with the misunderstanding and twist that comes early but the way the ML handles it all is ridiculous. And what's worse is that the FML is unable to slap him around for what he's done and he's acting like he didn't screw her over. Chapter 5 is supposed to be this lovey-dovey, awkward date but it's unbearable. The guy hasn't earned this and in better stories would've lost his chance with her forever.

This feel kind of unfair. Like, reverse the situation and u will find stories where the ML completely forgets and move on, but this one is kinda ahhh
